How to control the roundness and cylindricity of precision parts machining

In the process of precision parts processing, grinding is done by two top clamps, plugs are installed at both ends of the rotor, the dial drives the rotor to rotate around the axis of the center hole of the plugs at both ends, the grinding wheel feeds radially and axially and finally the smooth knife completes the fine grinding. The main indicators for evaluating the quality of cylindrical grinding are roundness and cylindricity. There are many reasons for the roundness error in precision parts processing, most of which are based on objective factors such as machine tool accuracy and processing benchmarks, including top hole quality, grinding wheel spindle accuracy, grinding wheel spindle dynamic balancing parameters, etc. Generally, the roundness requirements can be met through preparatory work such as top hole grinding and spindle dynamic balancing block adjustment.

Cylindricity error includes roundness error, large and small diameter difference, generatrix straightness, etc. Usually, the roundness, generatrix straightness and cylindricity errors differ by an order of magnitude. Therefore, it is generally believed that controlling the cylindricity error is to control the large and small diameter difference at both ends of the rotor. The large and small diameter difference is mainly caused by the non-parallelism of the workpiece rotation axis and the lateral feed guide.


The precision of the guide rails of precision cylindrical grinding machine tools is much higher than the expected part precision. Therefore, the measurement benchmark can be established on the longitudinal feed guide rail, the gauge head is pressed on the generatrix away from the grinding wheel side, and the guide rail is moved longitudinally to obtain the non-parallelism between the generatrix and the guide rail. The compensation method can adjust the machine headstock or the tailstock. Taking the tailstock adjustment as an example, the gauge is pressed at one end close to the tailstock to make fine adjustments to the tailstock.
